THE Hauraki Plains Gazette With which is Incorporated THE OHINEMURI GAZETTE MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, FRIDAY “Public Service” MONDAY, JULY 17, 1950 DIGNITY OF PARLIAMENT

The appeal for more dignity in the conduct of the proceedings of the House of by the Government member for Selwyn, Mr McAlpine, is timely.. Much of the legislation will run counter to that bf the last Government and there will be need, to restrain tempers which may be roused by the adoption of divergent policies to those of the past decade. When, however, Mr McAlpineappeals to the newspapers to“minimise” incidents' he is not displaying wisdom. The deliberations of Parliament are broadcast, 'and Parliament now speaks for itself and the public looks to the press for true reports of the doings of the country’s elected representatives. If membersare mot proud of the conduct of its proceedigs that cannot be avoided and perhaps it is just as well that press reports give a clear picture of takes place in our legislating chamber. The remedy is in the hands of Parliament itself to so shape its- behaviour that it earns l the respect and not censure from a public which is entitled to know what goes in the conduct of the busL ness of the country.
