FROM SOUTH AFRICA

TO SECURE DOCTORS DEPARTMENT REJECTS PLAN “It is regretted that the department is unable to support the proposal that the board pays the travelling expenses of house surgeons from South Africa,” stated a letter from the Department of Health, Wellington, which was considered at the April meeting of the Thames Hospital Board. The letter stated the department was not satisfied that the assisting of medical officers in that way by the hospital, particularly with regard to those of junior status, offered a satisfactory solution to the staffing problem. The department took the view that the board should contemplate the provision of adequate accommodation which would assist materially in obtaining resident staff.
