WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

MONTHLY GATHERING HELD

MARAMARUA-KOPUKU MEETS There was a good attendance at the. monthly meeting 'of the MaramaruaKopuku Women’s Institute held recently, Mrs I. Peach presiding. The new committee presented printed programmes for the year’s work, which promises to be most interesting. Mrs Priest offered to take a class for dress-making, prior to each meeting. A report on the annual council meeting in Thames, which she had attended as delegate was given by Mrs G. Hare, who fully explained the whole procedure and described the outstanding exhibits on the competition tables. Mrs Hare complimented the makers of the sponge cake and the shoulder spray, which had gained full marks and also those who had cooperated in makirtg the remaining entries, which were only a few marks behind the winners. The roll call on superstitions was very entertaining, some of the old ones being (Spilling 'salt or ’sugar, bumble 'bee in the house means a stranger will call, fantail unlucky, also looking at the new moon through glass, Friday the 13th, wish when a white horse is seen, but don’t look at his tail, same to apply to a piebald horse, ladders, picking up pins and many others. It was decided to have special flowers sent to Cornwall hospital for Mrs D. Dreadon and her small son as a small appreciation of the long services given to the institute by her as flower hostess. Birthday sprays were presented to Mesdames Searle, W/ Lawson, Costello, F. Steed, Preston, Shadbolt, C. Finlayson, A. Manning, A. Findlay and M. Smith. A new member welcomed was Mrs J.
