EAST WATER SUPPLY BREAKS IN THE MAINS •- - - HEAVY TRAFFIC BLAMED “ Over the east water supply there have been a number of breaks during the month. Most of the trouble has been the meins shifting out of line and allowing the rubber rings to squeeze out On the edges of Tnost roads there are large cracks in the ground which are fairly deep and generally follow the old pipe trench. With that and the heavy traffic the mains shift in the weak places,” reported the east water supply supervisor, Mr J. Bradford, to the March meting of the Hauraki Plains County Council. “Two breaks occurred on the TuruaNetherton road, where there is a sixinch concrete main. The trenches were dug out during the day and both breaks were repaired with the one shut off at 8 p.m. Both repairs were completed by 11.30 p.m.,” continued the report.

“ On Saturday, February 11a (break was repaired on the 10-inch main on Huirau road. This break was four chains down the road from Mr J. Radich’s house. The whole of the supply had to be shut off at the stop valve on the main on Huirau road opposite Gumtown road. The water was shut off at 9.30 a.m. and was partly restored by 12.30 p.m. • “ The stop valve on the corner of Orchard east road was shut off to carry out repairs to a six-inch concrete main next to Mr Tapp's property. This break was repaired on the same day as the 10-inch break, the water being restored on this road by 3.45 p.m.

“On the following Sunday, February 12, another break was repaired on Orchard east road. This was one on a bend in the road between Mr McComb’s cow shed and house. A section of main was shut off from 1 pan. until 4 p.m.

“On Friday February 17 some stop valves on the one inch snbmains around Turua township were checked over. The grader had shifted some of the valve cover boxes.

“The night of February 17 was worked assisting the west water supply supervision with repairs to the 10 inch main next to Mr. French’s property, Waitakaruru.

“Puriri headworks was inspected on Monday February 20. The stream had dropped since the last rain and there was air suction in the intake chamber. “A break on Pekapdka road four inch main next to Mr M. Pearce's property had to be repaired. The pipe was unearthed during the day and repairs were carried out during the night. This break occurred on Thursday, February 28. “On Friday, February 24 a report of a break on the 10 inch concrete main on the Puriri landing side of the Waihou river was investigated but no serious break could be found. It was reported to be close to the Waihou river pipe crossing.

“On the night of February 24 after coming from Puriri landing I assisted the west water supervisor with the repair of a break on the 10 inch main next to Mr. Berney’s property, Waitakaruru.

“A break oh the welt supply 10 inch main was phoned to me on Saturday morning, February 25, at 10.30 a.m. With the assistance of one of the truck drivers the ground was dug out in readiness for repairs to be carried out during the night.
