ENGINEERS WANTED
DRAINAGE OPERATIONS BOARD’S STAFF OVERWORKED “We have to face up to the position that it will be our responsibility to provide the engineering staff for the needs of the drainage boards of the district,” said Mr H. M. Corbett, chairman of the Hauraki Catchment Board, at its March meeting. The matter would have to be gone into carefully but would have to be dealt with at a later date as the board’s staff did not at present permit of its acceptance of the responsibility. Mr J. F. Mayn pointed out that the board should exercise care and move slowly as it had not sufficient staff for its own requirements let alone to supply engineers for drainage boards. The chairman pointed out that where a subsidy was applied for by a drainage board, the work had to be approved and the manner of its being carried out had to be under the supervision of the catchment board. It was a responsibility the catchment board could not escape. Mr Mayn took the view that the full time of the engineer should be confined at present to the board’s main schemes, the progress of which would be considerably hampered if the board’s engineers had to be taken off such works to deal with drainage board’s operations. The catchment board’s engineers were overworked at present, said Mr Mayn.
