OBITUARY

MR T. BROCKLEHURST LIVED IN PAEROA AND DISTRICT Just recently there passed away suddenly at the Thames hospital an old and much respected resident of Paeroa and Waitakaruru in the person of Mr Thomas Brocklehurst at the of 69 years. Mr Brocklehurst was bom in Derbyshire, England, and waa to son of the late Mr and Mrs Thomas Brocklehurst. Deceased was educated at Alderwaaley school, later following a farming life, though for some years he was engaged on large waterworts undertakings, to / opemtiona of which were to deal with to water which flawed into to old lead mtaoa, noeeaak taring ita being pumped » osHoe tate the Derwent and used as a eswroe of water supply for nJarge toUm. At to age of 12 he took a position on to : estate,of Richard Jobnooa’a, tho wfrt manufacturers, under to direction of his unde, who was to form usaangor v his wages being ffve ahfltops week.

In 1900 to late Mr Broddatwrst married Miss Elisabeth Taylor in Wirksworth, England, and in 19*41 they came to New Zealand and settled on land in ita virgin state four miles west of Waitakaruru. There he lived with his family until ill health necessitated his retirement some two yean ago, when Mr and Mrs Brocklehurst came to live in Paeroa.

Deceased took a very keen interest in politics and was an ardent supporter of the Labour Party. He was particularly interested in workers’ welfare. His particular hobby was the mending of clocks. Two sisters of Mr Brocklehurst survive him, Mrs E. Peach and Mrs Wm Curzon, both of whom live in England. His only surviving brother is Mr Frank H. Brocklehurst of Avondale.

Of the children of his marriage there are two daughters, Mrs D. Sears and Mrs T. Axcell, both of Waitakaruru, and six sons, Messrs Thomas Brocklehurst of Waitakaruru, Harry Brocklehurst of Paeroa, Richard Brocklehurst of Patetonga, John Brocklehurst of Waitakaruru, Samuel Brocklehurst of Hamilton, and Frank Brocklehurst of Waitakaruru. Thirteen grandchildren survive him.
