WAIONE CUP RUGBY
MATCH AT WHITIANGA
In a fast open Rugby match for the Waione cup on Saturday, TairuaHikuai played Kuaotunu to a draw. A large crowd of spectators turned out at Whitianga. Both teams had had one win each in the competition and excitement ran high. Following their kick-off, Kuaotunu pressed with open play. A good back line movement by lan Simpson, Winiata and D. Simpson looked promising, but was spoilt by a knock-on. Kuaotunu forwards kept play in the twenty-five until a good interception changed Tairua’s defence into attack. First points went to Kuaotunu when the back line sent the ball out to Brophy on the wing. He put in a good run and scored in the corner. The kick failed. Kuaotunu 3, Tairua-Hikuai 0. A period of open play by both teams was spoilt bj- faulty handling but Kuaotunu scored again when Winiata cut through to score a nice try. The kick failed. Kuaotunu 6, Tairua-Hikuai 0. Keeping the game open, Kuaotunu went once more on the attack and Winiata gave a fine display of penetration, when he cut through to the fullback, before passing to P. Simpson, who scored. Winiata converted, making the score at half-time Kuaotunu 11, Tairua-Hikuai 0. From the beginning of the second spell Tairua dominated the play. Fast forward rushes took play over Kuaotunu’s line and W. Prescott dived over to score. D. Cory-Wright converted with a fine kick. Kuaotunu 11, Tairua-Hikuai 5. Tairua forwards continued to set the pace and were successful when R. Homan dribbled through to score. The kick failed. Kuaotunu 11, Tairua-Hikuai 8.
Within a few minutes R. Homan scored an almost identical try, but the kick failed, making the score Kuaotunu 11, Tairua-Hikuai 11. At this stage the crowd was on its toes and barracking for both sides was spirited but, although the remainder of the game was unusually fast, the defence of both teams was excellent and there was no further score. Mr F. Donaghy was referee. MATCH AT WHENUAKITE UNITED’S EASY WIN Playing at Whenuakite on Saturday in the Waione cup competition United defeated Whitianga by 2-3 points t'- ’), Mr H. W. Hinds was the refeiee. WAIONE CUP POSITION OF TEAMS With one match each to be played by the four teams in the Mercury Bay Rugby Union’s Waione cup competition, the points position is as follows: Kuaotunu -3, Tairua-Hikuai 3, United 2. Whitianga 0. MATCHES ON SATURDAY NO COMPETITION RUGBY .J No competition Rugby matches will I be played in the Mercury Bay area next Saturday. The Whitianga club will travel to Manunui and TairuaHikuai to Tauranga. A combined Kuaotunu-LTiited team will play a Thames Physical Training team at Whitianga. •
