TRIBUTE PAID

LATE MR W. HAMILTON

PIONEER OF THE PENINSULA

At the April meeting of the Coromandel County Council the chairman, Mr E. E. Deeble, referred to the passing of Mr William Hamilton of Whenuakite. The late Mr Hamilton was, he said, a highly respected former councillor and member of the community. Mr Hamilton had served for many years on the council and spent many years of his life in furthering the development of the county. Mr Deeble said he had attended the funeral at Whitianga as the representative of the council.

Cr. H. T. Robinson endorsed the remarks of the chairman and said what a wonderful pioneer Mr Hamilton had been and that his passing would be felt over the peninsula. Cr. W. J. Hare said he could pay no greater homage than this that although Mr Hamilton had passed on his work would live on and long be remembered.

Cr. T. V. Whittle said that in the passing of Mr Hamilton New Zealand had lost one of the very best type of pioneers and it could only be hoped that the younger generation would follow in his steps.

The sympathy of the council was expressed, the meeting standing in silence. HOSPITAL BOARD SERVICE TO COMMUNITY Reference to the death of Mr William Hamilton, of Whitianga, a past member of the Thames Hospital Board, was made at the April meeting of the board.

Mr J. W. Danby said that he and the secretary, Mr A. L. Neighbour, had represented the board at the funeral and the attendance there was a wonderful indication of the respect of the people of the district to one of its pioneers.

“ During the time that Mr Hamilton was here we were all impressed by his sincerity and by his balanced judgment,” said Mr Danby. “He was not a man who was carried away with any

airy, superficial ideas, and I am sure that all would agree with pie that the years he spent as a colleague with us were years of mutual benefit and pleasure,” he continued. He moved that an expression of sympathy be conveyed to Mr Hamilton’s wife and family, with appreciation of his life of service to the community.

Members stood in silence to confirm this resolution.
