POOR RESPONSE

VERMIN CONTROL CHILDREN’S COMPETITION A disappointingly small number of entries was received for the Ohinemuri Acclimatisation Club’s vermin destruction campaign, which was open to school children from December 20 to February 15. Sponsored by the Auckland club, the competition was in the nature of an experiment to induce the destruction of hedgehogs, stoats, weasels, ferrets and hawks. Bounties were paid for snouts, tails or feet of the vermin and five prizes, ranging from £3 to ss, were offered for the largest collections. Only 13 entries were received, most of them from districts outside Paeroa,

with a total of 51 weasels’, stoats’ or ferrets’ tails, 39 pairs of hawks’ feet and 26 hedgehogs’ snouts. The sum of £ll 17s was paid out in bounties. The winners of the competition were: W. P. Sydenham (Ngatea), 27 tails, 8 pairs hawks’ feet, 1; C. Hooper (Waitawheta), 11 tails, 3 pairs hawks’ feet, 2; D. E. Bax (Wharepoa), 4 tails, 9 pairs hawks’ feet, 5 hedgehogs’ snouts, 3; A. Buchanan (Awaiti) 3 tails, 6 pairs hawks’ feet, 4; R. F. Shilton (Kerepehi), 13 pairs hawks’ feet, 5.
