MIRAGE SEEN

PARTY ON KARANGAHAKE SEA AND ISLANDS SEEN While proceeding to the Karangahake trig on Sunday, a party of Paeroa people witnessed a mirage. A line which appeared to be the sea horizon appeared in the sky with two islands in the picture, one appearing like Mayor island, with a smaller island to the south. Normally, neither the sea nor the islands can be seen from the point on Karangahake on which the party stood. The party watched the mirage for some time and then proceeded to a point on the hill where the sea could normally be seen. As the party climbed, the mirage slowly sank to the horizon, the islands disappearing and the top of Mayor island gradually appeared above the normal horizon.
