HIGH SCHOOL WIN

KNOCK-OUT COMPETITION

FINAL CRICKET MATCH

KURTOVICH IN GOOD FORM

The final game of the Paeroa Cricket Club’s knock-out competition was played on the Paeroa domain on Saturday between High School and West and the result was the winning of the competition by the High School team for the second year in succession.

Skipper D. Fitch won the toss for High School and sent West in to bat. D. Kemp and H. Taylor were batting forcefully when C. Speechlay successfully appealed for lbw against Taylor. F. Carmichael played carefully and found it difficult to place a ball past the alert School fielding. His score of 35 was hard fought for. N. Herold, captain of the West team, joined Carmichael when L. Brooks was unfortunate in tipping a ball of M. Millar which was deflected off the keeper’s gloves and taken in the slips by D. Martin, who was substituting in the field. Herold played himself in and any loose balls were smartly sent to the boundary. Herold looked settled when C. Speechlay took the change of bowling and dismissed Herold with an excellent ball. Herold’s score of 36 included three fours and two sixes. The last bowler for High School was M. Millar, who took four wickets for 18 runs. C. Speechlay took two for 58 runs. It was pleasing to see T. Henderson turn out for West and his bowling on the day was right on the wicket.

High School opened with I. Kurtovich and J. Jensen and there were 55 runs on the board before Jensen was caught by Herold off Brooks, with his score at 14. Kurtovich’s score of 64 not out was the best innings of the day. He saw all the High School batsmen dismissed and had the honour to hit the winning run. High School won by eight runs. This is the second year that the High School eleven has been defeated in the points games but has come to light to win the knock-out competition. The successful bowlers for West were; L. Brooks, who tooks three wickets for 71 runs, Herold two for 20 runs,-and T. Henderson three for 35 runs.
