WAITAKARURU SCHOOL PICNIC AT THE BEACH RESULTS OF SPORTS HELD

The Waitakaruru school picnic, previously postponed because of inclement weather, was held under excellent conditions at Kaiaua on Monday, February 21. There was a particularly festive atmosphere among the largest crowd that had assembled at a school picnic for a number of years. Mr Hinton, headmaster, his staff and the school committee were congratulated on their efficient organisation, which made the outing an unqualified success. Lunch and afternoon tea w'as served by the ladies, while the ice cream and cordials were popular among the children. The sports events were run off in a quick, professional manner, the many novelty relay events causing considerable interest. Results of the athletic events were as follow: —

Open three-legged race: Barbara Turkington and Barbara Roberts 1, Wally Thompson and Ira Wilkinson 2, Violet Grbic and Beverley Ganley 3. School championships, girls: Barbara Roberts 1, Anne Taylor 2, Violet Grbic 3. Boys: Harbans Singh 1, Ira Wilkinson 2, Leo Grbic 3. In the adults relay, married women versus single women, the single women’s team won. Single ladies’ race: Shirley Ganley 1, Winsome Gordon 2, Margaret Gordon 3. Married ladies: Mrs M. Yeager 1, Mrs J. W. Smith 2, Mrs H. Riley 3. Men: Buster Ramshaw 1, T. Hutchinson 2, G. Christoffersen 3.
