HAPPY WEEK-END
BAND ENTERTAINED BOYS FROM PONSONBY VARIED ITINERARY Kerepehi was the scene of activity during the week-end when the Ponsonby Boys’ Band travelled to Kerepehi at their own expense to assist the Kerepehi Boys’ Band, a gesture that was gratefully appreciated by the local band committee and the band boys. An offer to help pay expenses was declined with thanks by Mr Christenson, the Ponsonby secretary, who stated that his boys were only too pleased to come down and assist the local boys. It had been a very happy week-end for all as the local residents who had billeted the boys had gone out of their way to make them welcome and they all appreciated such friendly hospitality. Arriving at Kerepehi-on Saturday morning the Ponsonby boys were met by the Kerepehi band committee and were taken on a tour to inspect the Ngatea butter and cheese factories and the Kaihere flax mill, after which they went to the Kerepehi school for dinner, which was cooked in a kapa Maori, a novelty for the Auckland boys, which was thoroughly enjoyed.
In the afternoon two seven-a-side football matches were played- between the Ponsonby boys and Kerepehi boys, requiting in two wins for Kerepehi. In the evening the band was entertained at the pictures, a dance following. The music wtes supplied by boys from the Ponsonby band, assisted by Mr B. Benney of Kerepehi on the drums. Crowd at Domain On Sfinday afternoon, which was fine though windy, a scrVen-a-side football tourney was held on the Kerepehi domain, there being over 500 in attendance from all over the Plains, Thames and Paeroa. At 2 p.m. the Ponsonby Boys’ Band paraded on -the ground l?d by Sgt.Major Les. Manley. They received a great ovation as their marching and playing was excellent. Between the games the .band p,layed items, and helped to while"away a very pleasant afternoon. Concert, in, Evening In jthe evening tho. Ponsonby band gave a concert in the Kerepehi hall which was crowded, and judging by the round of applause after each item, the crowd thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
Mr T. Jordan, president of the Kerepehi Boys’ Band Committee, expressed the appreciation of the local band and committee for the splendid gesture of the Ponsonby band in coming to Kerepehi at their own expense to assist the local boys. In conclusion he stated that it would give the local, boys an incentive to work hard to try and come up to the Ponsonby boys’ standard. Mr Christenson, in reply, stated that it gave them great pleasure to assist and he hoped that they would be able to come again, as they had all thoroughly enjoyed the trip. Z ltems By Band
Mr Vivian, Kerepehi bandmaster, expressed his appreciation and stated that he was indeed very grateful to the Ponsonby band and he was sure that the local boys would greatly benefit by the display of the Ponsonby boys. He was 'sure that it would make them ail keen to come to practices in the future.
The band supplied the items under the baton of Bandmaster Martin, who has led the band for over 20 years:— March, “ Down the Mall,” by the band; xylophone solo by bandboy Tom Jones; vocal solos, Mr G. Pinnock of Ngatea, “Follow the Plough” and “Phil the Pinter's Ball”; waltz, “ Memories of Strauss ” by the band; hymn, “ Nearer My God to Thee,” by the band; Alamack, the Magician; character pidce, “ Mill on the Dale ; trombone solo, Aerobal; tone poem selection by the band; vocal solos, Mr Pinnock; xylophone duet; march, »' Marching Guards national anthem. Mr Jordan expressed his thanks to Mr Pinnock for assisting with the programme.
football tourney THAMES WIN SENIOR CUP In the seven-a-side football tourney played at Kerepehi over the week-end the senior cup was won by Thames and the junior by the Kerepehi A team. The two cups were donated by Mr T. Campbell of Dargaville, a former Kerepehi football player. The highlight of the day was the medal football match between the town midgets and the block midgets for the Lollypop Shield. Town won three to nil, Glen Innis scoring the try for Town. Mr J. Grey was referee.
Results of the matches were as follows:— Seniors Kerepehi 9, defeated Turua 3, K. Reddy, T. Fisher’and R.-Murray scoring one try each for Kerepehi -and T. Death a try for Turua; Mr J. Masters was the referee. Waitakaruru 3, defeated Paeroa nil. At time up there was no score but after ten minutes extra playing the above score resulted, P. Mataroa scoring a tjy. Mr W. Bailey was referee. Ngatea 11, defeated Kerepehi B nil. S. Fisher scored two tries, R. Laurence scored and converted one try. Mr J. Masters was referee. Thames 15, defeated Paeroa nil. J. McLean scored two tries which were converted by K. Watson. C. McNeil scored and converted one try. Mr J. Grey was the referee. Waitakaruru 8, defeated Ngatea 5 (semi-final match). For Waitakaruru C. 0. Brown scored one try; B. Stretton one try, which was converted by B. O’Neil. For Ngatea B. Tatton scored one try which .was converted by R. Laurence. Mr J. Masters was the referee.
Thames 11 defeated Kerepehi 3 (semi-final match). W. Fisher scored with a penalty kick for Kerepehi. J. McLean scored three tries and K. Watson converted one for Thames. Mr W. Bailey was referee. In the final, Thames 15, defeated Waitakaruru 5. For Thames K. Millington scored one try which was converted! by G. Watson; J. McLean scored and converted; G. Watson scored and converted. R. Duffin scored one try which was converted by B. O'Neil for Waitakaruru. Thames thus won the T. Campbell Cup in the senior section. Mr J. Masters was the referee. Primary School Matches Kerepehi A 6, defeated Turua A nil. H. Samuel scored two tries. Mr J. Grey was the referee. Ngatea A 15, defeated Kerepehi B nil. For Ngatea L. Tatton scored and converted one try; F. Billing scored and converted-two tries. Mr J. Grey was the referee. In the final Kerepehi A 18, defeated Ngatea nil. H. Samuels scored two tries; C. Carr two tries, H. Samuels converted three tries. Kerepehi won the T. Campbell Cup in the junior section.
