UNFAIR SPENDING ? BALANCING THE BUDGET DISCUSSION BY COUNCILLORS Attention was drawn to the figures on the current year’s estimates of the Coromandel County Council by Cr. H. T. Robinson at the July council meeting. He pointed out that Colville and Coromandel ridings had overspent their allocations and Mercury Bay was being penalised as a result. He intended calling a ratepayers’ meeting he said, to put these figures before them. “ If Mercury Bay forms a town board the council won’t ge’t the support of Mercury Bay,” he said. Cr. J. H. Reddy: We’ve been over your roads and they’re a king to ours. Before you call your meeting we want you to come and see ours. There are main highways going through Coromandel but there are none in Colville or Kuaotunu. The chairman, Mr E. Deeble; Cr. Robinson’s comments regarding the extension of county roads in Whitianga as main roads has merit. Cr. T. V. Whittle: The revenue of the county is nowhere near enough for the expenditure needed and where to make the line of compromise to balance our budget is .a hard problem, and whatever we do it’s bound not to suit everyone. It’s no good starting on roads and leaving the ratepayers with no roads in order to balance the budget. That the bridge loan or rate is the only way to save the position was generally acceded to by the councillors.
