WHITIANGA WIN

MATCH WITH MANUNUI INTEREST IN THE GAME FINAL SCORE EIGHT TO THREE When the Manunui football team visited Whitianga for the week-end they played a match against the Whitianga club team. There was a large crowd of spectators present at the match which was played under perfect weather conditions. Whitianga won by eight points to three. The game was fast and exciting with the two teams very even. Manunui kicked off and a fast pace was set immediately. High up and under tactics were employed by both teams, with the honours going to the visiting fullback, J. McGovern. A loose rush by Whitianga forwards looked promising, when T. Hare made an opening for G. Simpson to send Otter on attack. 'From a scrunf on the twenty-five Whitianga hooked cleanly and Simpson worked the blind to Davis. He passed to Peachey whg, was forced out on the corner after a strong run.

After heavy scrums on the Manunui line, Wallen cleared with a fine line kick. From the line-out Manunui secured and Wallen opened up the play. Nice handling by both visiting five-eighths was marred when the centre’s in pass went astray. Whitianga forwards, led by Dale and Sewell, gained ground and quick heeling let Simpson pass to Davis who passed to Chaney for him to score in a handy position. Chaney converted. Whitianga 5, Manunui nil.

Manunui opened up the play with passing rushes but the defence was sound. From the line-out Wallen passed out to Doyle and E. Buchanan, who looked dangerous until Peachey intercepted and reversed the attack. A period of bright open play followed, but tackling was so sure that the ball failed to pass the centre threequarters. G. Simpson ran from the base of the scrum to cut out several men before passing to Rohrlach.who raced down the line, only to be'well tackled by McGovern. G. Doyle cleared nicely and the score at halftime was still: Whitianga 5, Manunui nil.

After the spell Manunui attacked strongly in Whitianga’s twentyfive. Wallen repeatedly got the ball away to Doyle and Buchanan but defence iby Chaney and Davis was sound. A forward rush by Whitianga took play to mid-dield where Simpson opened the •best movement in the game and good' handling by Davis and Chaney saw Otter cut in and score under the posts. The kick failed. Whitianga 8, Manunui nil.

Manunui forwards led by Thompson, Edhouse and Rora, took play to Whitianga’s line where Hodge secured from a iine-out and went over to score. The kick failed. Whitianga 8, Manunui 3. Fast forward play with J. Simpson and Dale prominent for Whitianga and H. Buchanan and Freer for the visitors, kept the game bright. A determined attack in Whitianga’s twentyfive had Whitianga hard pressed but the defence held and Otter cleared. A nice break by Hare looked promising. The game ended with Whitianga on the attack. Mr F. Donaghy was the referee. The teams were:—

Manunui: J. McGovern, R. Marshall, T. McGovern, L. Brierly, G. Doyle (captain), E. Buchanan, Wallen, Rora, Hodge, Patterson, H. Buchanan, Freer, Thompson, Edhouse and Gatty. Whitianga: E. DAVIS CUP WIN FOR KUAOTUNU In an elimination Rugby match for the Davis Cup played at Whitianga before the Whitianga-Manunui match on Saturday, Kuaotunu defeated United by 12 points to nil. Kuao-. tunu’s fine back play was the deciding factor in the game. The game opened with heavy forward play in which K. Marshall, Rivas and Oliver (United) and Hodge, H. and P. Simpson (Kuaotunu) were prominent. Kuaotunu secured the first points when, after a good run, P. Winiata sent a perfectly times cross kick to Brophy, who sent D. McLean over to score. The kick failed. Kuaotunu 3, United nil. United forwards attacked with the iball at toe but P. Winiata cleared nicely. Snapping up a miss-kick by United, D. McLean put in a run to go over to make the half-time score: Kuaotunu 6, United nilp The second spell opened with even forward play, and when A. Simpson opened play to N. Winiata a fine movement resulted in which P. Winiata dummied twice before sending McLean over to score. The kick failed. Kuaotunu 9, United nil.

Good defence by R. Williams and F. Harsant helped to keep Kuaotunu at bay and from a scrum on United’s goal-line R. Marshall cleared nicely with a splendid dribbling effort. Securing from the ruck, United’s half sent his backs away for K. Camp to put in a strong run which failed through lack of support. The final points came from a scrum in United territory, when A.
