TO PROTEST
PAEROA DECISION PROPOSED TRANSFER LANDS AND SURVEY OFFICE The proposed clothing of the Lands and Survey Department in Paeroa and the transfer of the office to Hamilton was a subject discussed with concern by members of the Paeroa Chamber of Commerce at their May meeting held recently. “It would be a detrimental sten to the district to lose the officer and close his office.” said the president, Mr E. W. Lee. “It means, in other words, more remote control. It is a very difficult matter for the Hamilton office to control matters even up as far as Paeroa,” he said, “ and I understand that this district’s zone goes right up to Colville. It is an area big enough for a man stationed locally, without having to handle it from Hamilton.” Mr A. C. Boulton: “It looks as though all we can do it protest in writing as the Government seems to be concentrating all its offices in Hamilton. The writing seems to be on the wall that way.” Mr H. Hare said he thought that a protest should be raised immediately.
Mr Boulton moved that a letter be written to the Minister of Lands protesting against the proposed closing of the local office and the transfer of the officer, pointing out the definite advantages of having a man in the district able to give the whole of the area more of a personal service than a centralised office.
The motion was seconded by Mr C Kenny.
