BREWERY CLOSING

NO BOTTLES, NO BEER PAEROA SUPPLY SHORT HOTELS ON SUFFICIENT QUOTA There will be no beer brewed in Paeroa after Friday of this week. The reason is that there is not the supply of bottles available to contain the beer. Large orders have been received by the brewery from all parts of New Zealand but they have had to be refused.

The manager of the Paeroa brewery, Mr H. C. May, stated to a representative of the Gazette recently that there was about 6000 gallons of beer to be bottled, but it could not be done as the bottles could not be obtained. The shortage would continue for a long while yet, he said, and although the holiday season buying made the position more acute, the trouble was that the soda ash, which was needed in glass making was not available in New Zealand.

If people would return all the bottles that they bought the situation would be a lot easier, he said. But often they were thrown away and put out of production. There were hundreds of bottles that he knew of in Paeroa, but they could not be used because the people would not return them. Hotels On Quotas Proprietors of hotels in Paeroa are ■on quotas at present, but the majority think that they will have enough beer, both bottled and draught, to carry them over the holiday period. plenty of beer as it is on a good quota and it has more beer than last year. As with most other short supplies the regular customers will be served first. The same will be true of dealers trading with the Paeroa brewery, the local buyers will get preference there, said Mr May. If there is a shortage of bottled beer in the next few days the empties that are lying around back yards, or put away with the intention to ‘be returned, will have had a lot to do with : t.
