16th BIRTHDAY HELD
WAIKINO WOMEN’S INSTITUTE VERY POPULAR FUNCTION The Sixteenth 'birthday anniversary of the Waikino branch of the Women’s Institute was a popular function, judging by the large attendance in spite of the very inclement weather. Among those present were Mrs Pinnock, the federation president; Mrs Paul, Mrs Pope, of Glen Eden, and representatives of the Netherton, Paeroa, Waihi, Waihi and Puriri branches. An excellent concert programme reflected great credit on all concerned and all items were very much applauded. Mr and Mrs Pinnock entertained with a humorous sketch. Miss Millie Munroe delighted with the sailors’ hornpipe and Irish Jig- An elocutionary item “New Shoes was given by Miss Barbara Bowler with “The Owl” as an encore. Songs were sung by Mr Pinnock and Miss Raewyn Rennie. Whilst waiting for the Drama Circle to complete their set up, a community sing was led by Mr Pinnock. The Waikino Drama Circle were in good form in the rendering of a play entitled “Sing a Song of Sixpence. Players taking part were: Mrs Whittington as Mrs Persimmon; Mrs Fisher as Angela Persimmon; Mrs McClintock as Mrs Romaine,; Mrs Stacey as Josephine Romaine; Mrs' A. Robinson as Mrs Nelson; Miss J. Whittington as the maid. The presentation by the Waikino Junior Circle of a minuet provided a very spectacular setting. Misses P. Lithgow, F. Campbell, J. Metcalfe, J. Whittington, M. Bray, R. Hollis and C. Brown dressed in evening ■ frocks, and Misses P. Campbell, B. Bowler, J. Snodgrass, B. Brown, J. Binney, P. Stubbs, K. Campbell and R. Rennie, with wee Gloria Bray in the centre front formed a wonderful rainbow effect with their coloured paper dresses. Miss L. Snodgrass was the accompaniste for the evening. Mrs N. Lithgow, president, welcomed the guests of the evening and thanked all who had assisted to make the party so successful. To Miss M. Munro and the members of the Junior Circle she presented chocolates and flowers. The birthday cake which was made by Mrsvl. Robinison, and iced and decorated by Mi’ Alex Findlay was placed on the stage and was adorned with the usual birthday candles which were lit by Mrs Rennie and extinguished by Betty Brown. Presentation of bouquets were made to the president Mrs Lithgow, scretary Mrs J. Robinson and treasurer Mrs A. Campbell by the federation president, Mrs Pinnock and the presidents of the visiting branches. The stage and supper room decorated in the institute colours of blue, with a toning of daffodils, gave a very charming effect. Mrs Pinnock in her remarks gave much praise to the junior circle for their fine display of sponges. The cup won by the institute was on display. The evening’s entertainment concluded with a dance to the music of the Rhythm Ramblers. The duties in the supper room in the charge of Mrs Watt and the kitchen of Mrs Henry were ably carried out. Mr N. Lithgow carried out the duties of M.C. Mrs N. Lithgow, president, wore a black evening frock with velvet coatee; Mrs J. Robinson, secretary, black satin evening frock , with blue spray; Mrs A. Campbell, treasurer, pink evening frock with silver trimmings; Mrs Pinnock, black evening frock with black and silver sequins.
