SALINE INJECTIONS
SPECTACULAR ARTHRITIS CURE FORMER BEDRIDDEN GIRL A girl who has been bedridden' with arthritis for year has dispensed 1 with crutches and is able to do housework after undergoing a new saline injection treatment. The treatment was used at Sunderland Royal Infirmary, Durham, by Doctors William GrantWaugh and J. Mawson. Dr. Grant-Waugh began research 13 years ago, and his first patient was a crippled racehorse, which won three steeplechases after six months’ treatment. Dr. Grant-Waugh then treated 1 himself. An infirmary official said: “The treatment is not confined to any special length of time. The injections rarely make the patient feel ill. “The ‘drug’ employs the acid versus alkaline principle.” A B.M.A. spokesman said it was not a quack remedy. There was nothing secret or dangerous about the treatment, but it had not yet been established that it cured arthritis. World-wide Interest The two doctors were reputable physicians, but their success may have been due partly to other causes, as their experiments were conducted without “ controls,” the spokesman added. The infirmary has not yet adopted the new method as standard treatment, but gives details to any doctor asking for it. News of the success of the treatment has aroused world-wide interest. Some people have offered to travel from Brazil and Australia for treatment. The infirmary is so overwhelmed by inquiries that a special department has been established to handle mail and despatch replies. The infirmary doctor warned: “It must be emphasised that there is so far no absolute cure for arthritis. “We cannot treat all applicants here but are advising them to ask their own doctors to apply to us for details.” Main difficulty in treating overseas patients is that the solution used in the treatment is subject to deterioration in transit.
