WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

OHINEMURI GROUP ( _! MEETING AT HIKUTAIA The half-yearly meeting of the Ohinemufi group of Women’s Institutes was held last week at the Hikutaia Hall. Members of the Turua Institute were the hostesses for the day and their president, Mrs D. Clark, presided over a large attendance of members from Waihi, Waikino, Paeroa, Puriri, Wharepoa and Netherton. Presidents of the visiting institutes present were: Mrs Lithgow, Waikino; Mrs T. Bax, Wharepoa; Mrs Whisker, Paeroa; Mrs Townshend, Netherton. An apology was received from Mrs Williams, the Waihi president, and her place was taken by Mrs Carter, a vice-president. Several executive members of the Thames-Hauraki Federation of Women’s Institutes also attended. 'They were: The president, Mrs Pinnock; the secretary, Mrs Brady; the treasurer, Mrs Lithgow, and Mrs Scott, Mrs Marceau and Mrs Turton. The meeting opened with the singing of the group song. Lovely shoulder spray of flowers were presented to all the visiting officials. Of interest were the competition tables for the Capper Cup. The articles for judging were: A pastry jam -tart, six pieces of coconut ice, a crochet dressing table set, a soiled linen bag' from a flour 'bag, and huckaback hand towel. The winning display was by Waikino, who gained 90 points, Netherton was second 85, and Wharepoa and Puriri third with 84. The 'Capper Cup was presented during the afternoon to the Waikino president, Mrs Lithgow, by Mrs Pinnock, who when congratulating the winners on their success, remarked that it was the second time in succession that Waikino had won the cup. During the day a number of competitions and items of entertainment by the various institutes were greatly enjoyed and a brief talk by Mrs Pinnock on the Dominion 'Conference, which she had recently attended ,in Wellington, received an attentive hearing. Luncheon and afternoon tea was served by members of the Puriri institute. The tables looked most attractive with their vases of bright spring flowers. The competitions resulted: Blowing the candle (Waikino competition), won by Mrs Kelson, of Wharepoa institute; names of towns (Paeroa competition), won by Mrs Bown of Wharepoa institute; names of songs '(Wharepoa competition), won by Mrs Simpson of Netherton institute; naming well known advertisements (Waihi competition), won by Mrs Wynne. • The items during the day were: Mannequin parade, ancient and modern, by Wharepoa institute, aceompaniste Mrs Bown. Solos, “ Bless this House” and “The Old Refrain,” by Mrs Lithgow (Waikino), accompaniste Mrs Bown. Piano solo by Miss Watkins (Waihi). Solos, “ Kerry Dance” and “ Speak To Me Of Love ” by Mrs Wilkins (Netherton), accompaniste Mrs Townshend. “ Bell Bottom Trousers,” a song and dance number by the Paeroa institute. “Parade of Cellophane Hats ” (all hats made by members), by Puriri members.
