OBITUARY
MR U. B. INGLIS
COROMANDEL MINING EXPERT
The death has occurred at Coromandel of Mr Urquhart Brand “Tui” Inglis, who was born at Warepa, Otago, on June 8, 1884, being the elder son of the late Rev. G. B. Inglis and Mrs Inglis, his father being a Presbyterian minister. He attended the Otago Boys’ High
School and graduated at Otago University with the diploma at A.O.S.M. He had practical experience of coalmining at Kaitangata and Mount .Somers, and then went to Australia, where he spent several years associ-
ated with gold-mining at Targinnie, Gladstone, Broken Hill and. Rockhampton in Queensland. He returned to New Zealand in 1907 and was employed by the Waihi 'Gold Mining
Company as assayer at the Waikino Battery in 1908. He married Miss Rita Graham at Waihi in 1909 and lived at Waikino until he came to Coromandel as director of the Coro-
mandel School of Mines in June, 1912. He carried on as teacher of mining subjects and as an assayer and min-
ing engineer until the school closed. He then went to/the Renown Colleries as a mine surveyor and later returned to Coromandel, where he did mine assaying, surveying and reporting on mine propositions in various parts of the North Island. For a time he was employed in the Hauraki
mine at Coromandel, and was re-en-gaged as director of the School of Mines when it re-opened for a short period. He was re-employed at Waikino during part of the recent Avar years. His wife died in 1919 and he remarried in 1922.
For most of his life Mr Inglis was associated with the sporting activities of Coromandel, and took an active part in most local clubs, such< as sports and the regatta club, Rugby union, Miners’ and Prospectors’ Association, Labour Party and bowling club, being secretary of most of these organisations at various times'. He is survived by his wife and family of three sons and six daughters. The funeral was the largest seen in Coromandel for some years, over 100 being at the graveside. There were men present who had been taught by Mr Inglis in the School of Mines over 35 years ago, men who had been on surveying trips with him to all parts, and men who, with him,- had assayed rocks with bated breath. Mr V. Hart, of the Prebyterian Church, conducted the burial service.
