AID SOUGHT

HALL AT WHITIANGA DEPUTATION TO COUNCIL A deputation consisting of Messrs H. T. Robinson and G. Ross, being trustees of the Mercury Bay Hall, waited on the November meeting of the Coromandel County Council in reference to the replacement of the hall which was recently destroyed by fire. Mr Robinson briefly outlined the disaster that had occurred at Whitianga when their hall had been burned, and asked the council if a free grant for replacement could be made from the profits of the sale of the buildings at Hot Water Beach. The trustees could not raise a loan without the consent of the county but they had in hand about £l'7oo, most of which had been paid out for the large building at Hot Water Beach. Not Enough Money He explained that they had enough money in hand to keep a man employed for a month putting down the foundations for the new hall; an esti* mate of the ultimate cost of the new hall was between £2OOO and £3OOO. The people of Mercury Bay were aP out to run sports and other events to raise money, but it was felt that if the council could see its way clear to comply with the request that it would enable them to go on with the work while raising more funds. Mr Ross, speaking on behalf af Mercury Bay people, supported Mr Robinson’s remarks and said no stone was being left unturned in the effort to raise funds—even to running dances where he did not know at present. Comment By Chairman The county chairman, Mr E. Deeble, stated that the council was fully appreciative of the catastrophe which had overtaken Whitianga in the loss of their hall, but today the council was not in a position to discuss what assistance, or whether assistance could be given to the trustees, but the matter would be fully discussed at next meeting and the decision would be ■given then. Mr Robinson in reply to a question regarding the site stated that the constitution of the trust bound them hand and foot and he was afraid it could not be vested in the council.
