COMMITTEE DISBANDS HIKUTAIA ACTIVITIES MEMORIAL PLAQUE IN HALL There was a full attendance of members of the Hikutaia Farewell and Welcome Home Committee when their final meeting took place recently in the Hikutaia Hall, Mr Geo. Avery the chairman presided. The committee was established by the public, six and a half years aga and during that period has attended to the farewell and welcome home of 36 servicemen. These functions 1 have been public dances and on leaving each man received a money-belt and a small sum of money. A final reunion dance was held and 26 men received a further presentation. The amount of funds raised outside the cost of the functions tendered, has been in the vicinity of £360. Mr Geo. Avery addressing the committee said) he wished to thank all those who had assisted in the farewell and welcome home functions in any way. It had been a pleasure to work with the committee throughout, and it was only by having a good committee that such functions had been possible. To the ladies of the committee, Mr Avery said, special thanks were due, also the ladies who had, although not members of the committee, always helped to make sandwiches and serve The young men also had helped with the tea. Others of the committee who had done great work and deserve thanks said Mr Avery, were the secretary Mr J. Cofbett, the treasurer Mr P.
Corbett, Mr J. Goonan and the men who had always cleared the hall, the MjC.’s Messrs ; C. Mjurdock and H. .Sin'ith. the euchre markers and Messrs P. Corbett and. W. Bain. Special mention was also made by Mr Avery to the services rendered by Mr W. Green who had acted as doorkeeper for all the dances. As Mr Green was not a member of the committee, it was decided to write to him expressing appreciation of his services. The sum of £l/7/9 which was -in hand was donated to the funds of the Hall Committee. After a discussion it was decided that the plaque to be erected- by the committee in memory of the late Cpl. Henry Alley, should be placed in the H-ikutaia Hall and should be in brass, suitably inscribed. The funds m hand for this purpose will 'be held in trust by the Hall Committee, this committee being empowered to add further donations to the fund and to make all necessary arrangements for the erection of the memorial. -On the proposal of Mr A. Duncan and Mr S. Smith it was decided that the committee should disband as there was now no further need for their services. The meeting closed with thanks to the chairman, Mr -G. Avery, for his work and leadership of the committee throughout the war years, particularly in the capacity of speaker at all the many functions held.
