CHALLENGE IN
MIDDLEWEIGHT TITLE GEORGE ALLEN OF PAERO A GOOD RECORD IN PAST An aspirant to the Dominion middleweight boxing title, George Allen of Awaiti, Paeroa, has an impressive record behind him in the challenge recently made to the holder, J. Stevens, but not so far accepted. If accepted, the bout will take place some time about the end of the present month. Allen commenced his boxing career early, holding the amateur welterweight title for Wellington at the age of 16. At 18 he knocked out Stan Jenkins and took the Dominion middleweight title, in the same year (1938), beating E. Jacobs on points after a tough ten-round bout. He was at this time the youngest professional boxer in New Zealand, holding- the middleweight and light-heavyweight titles-. During military service in the Pacific he captured the Army, middleweight and light-heavyweight titles for that area. Now farming near Paeroa, Allen is being trained and managed by Mr M. Flay, of Te Aroha, who stated that he felt confident about the result of the forthcoming bout. Allen was in good condition and expected to- .fight at 12.2. “Our one trouble is to find a sparring partner for him,” said Mr Flay.
