CHESS IN PAEROA
WAIHI TEAM BEATEN INTEREST IN FINAL GAME ■ The Paeroa Chess Club successfully resisted the determined onslaught of the Waihi Chess Club at a recent evening and secured a win over the latter club by the narrow margin of two games, the (final score being Paeroa T 1 wins 1 draw to Waihi’s 9 wins 1 draw. Paeroa quickly established a lead tby winning the first five games, but a determined rally by the Waihi team gradually reduced the score until the very last game, which if won by Waihi would have secured a draw. However, Mr A. Jeffries, after a keenly-fought game checkmated Mr T. Roberts of Waihi, and thereby won the match for Paeroa.
Owing to the variation in the length of the games, light supper was served during the progress of the match.
•When the contest was' oyer, Mr T. Roberts, secretary for Waihi, thanked the Paeroa members for the very enjoyable evening, and extended an invitation for Paeroa to try conclusions at Waihi in the very near future. Mr R.
