HIKUTAIA POLO
ANNUAL MEETING OF CLUB ELECTION OF OFFICERS PROSPECTS FOR GOOD SEASON The: annual meeting of the Hikutaia Polo Club took place in the Hikutaia Hall. The . president, Mr Geo. Avery, presided over an excellent attendance of players and 1 supporters. The balance sheet showed l a fair credit balance and a good stock of equipment in hand. The president in making his report on the previous season, said) that the club was in a very good condition, considering the war years. Last season had been a good: season, the club had a lot of good polo and: this coming season it was hoped to have even better. It wag a good start- to 'begin with a credit balance and he congratulated both the club and their secretary, Mr J. Goonan, on their sound position. Mr Avery thanked Mr A. Duncan for the use of his paddock for which the club was very grateful, also Mr R. Hunter for his paddock at Puriri. Having this, had brought polo on in that district and the club had some very good members from there. Special thanks went to the ladieis who had rendered their usual willing service to the club, also to the auditor, Mr A. A. Jenkinson, of Paeroa. Thanks' were due also, said Mr Avery, to the press representative and' the Hauraki Plains Gazette, who had always given polo every publicity. Mr Avery also took the opportunity to welcome Mr Bill Duncan, just returned from overseas, back to the polo club. Mr Duncan was, said Mr Avery,
one of their original members and he hoped to see him swing a stick again this season.
It was decided that players’ fees would remain as usual, 10s 6d, and also that the same honorarium be paid to the secretary-treasurer.
The secretary was' instructed to write to the New Zealand Polo Association approving of the Bay of Plenty Club’s affiliation.
The secretary was also instructed to forward) a cheque to the Paeroa Polo Club for half the takings for the tournament held last season at Hikutaia and tO' wish them every success for the coming season. It was decided to approach Mr F. Klaus of Morrinsville to see if he would be willing for the Klaus Shield for junior teams to be played for, between Hikutaia, Morrinsville and Paeroa.
Mr Avery made reference to the sad death of one of their past members, Miss' Zelma Flavell, saying in what high esteem she had been held by all. Mr Avery requested the meeting to stand in silence for a minute as a tribute to the memory of a lovely girl.
