SPRING BLOOMS

BAY FLOWER SHOW BEAUTIFUL DISPLAY JUDGES’ DIFFICULT TASK The spring flower show, arranged by the Mercury Bay Women’s Institute, was held on September 5 in the Wihitianga Hall. The entries were of a high standard though perhaps fewer than is usual, at the September show. Daffodils were very early this season, and in some gardens the best had bloomed. The president, Mrs Sharpies, unfortunately was unable to be present, but Mrs Ralph extended a welcome, on her behalf, and then called on Mr Alan Watkins, one of the judges, to speak. Mr Watkins commented on the beauty of the display and said the best bloom exhibited was a daffodil, entered by Mrs Harrison.

Mrs IBroad ably assisted Mr Watkins in the often difficult task of deciding prize winners, as the blooms were so lovely and very little margin between them as in the two exhibits of Mrs K. White and Mi’s W. Henry. Both were really beautiful vases of ranunculii, Another special comment was the lovely vase of hyacinths in dainty pastel shades entered by Mrs H. Clarke.

The children’s section was very colourful, and the sand posies proved a popular entry. A lot of work had been put into them and in some instances the blending of colour was remarkable. ’

A fine exhibit of potatoes secured a special prize. The cooking section proved some of the girls were excellent cooks. The knitted cardigan section brought only three entries, but each was beautifully made.

The bring and buy stall sold out very quickly, and did brisk business. Mrs Bronlund, secretary, had a busy day and' was assisted by Mrs Harsant who received the flowers and arranged the classes. Afternoon tea was served.

Mrs Walker and Mrs White were in charge of the stall. Mrs R. A. Smith assisted as doorkeeper.
