THE Hauraki Plains Gazette. With which is Incorporated THE OHINEMURI GAZETTE MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, FRIDAY. “Public Service.” WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 26, 1945. MEETING A DEMAND

Hand in hand with the rehabilitation and demobilisation task goes that of distributing goods no longer wanted by the services. The need for quicker disposal of surplus war stocks has' been voiced in the House,

with emphasis on clothing, cutlery, hot water jugs, electric jugs and such articles. According to a Treasury report on Air Force supplies over 31,000 shirts were in stock, with 6000 to come —and the issues last year were only 8000. The public will want to know why these stocks are being allowed to accumulate while the civilian still has difficulty in buying a shirt. The serviceman lately become civilian again soon discovers that his allowance for the purchase of clothes is not satisfactory, because he can get neither range nor quantity in the lines he selects. If he wants to start a home he is faced with shortages of all kinds of lines. If only for the benefit of .the ex-service* man, something should be done to make available swiftly the goods the services cannot how use. Delay in their disposal can only mean deterioration. At present the market is hungry for these goods. But the market is not going to stay hungry. Manufacturing firms will be filling orders, and by that time service stores will be either out of date or unpopular. If an embarrassing position is going to develop because of these mounting surplus stocks, what would it be like if there were still in existence the thousands of pounds’ worth of stocks lost in the fire at Pelmerston North?
