FARMERS OBJECT

ACTION BY THE UNION WAITAKARURU ATTITUDE CARTAGE OF LIVE STOCK The monthly, meeting of the Waitakaruru branch of the Farmers’ Union was held recently when Mr N. W. Hedges presided over a fair attendance. A short report on the Northern Thames Sub - Provincial Executive meeting was given by the chairman after which a discussion on the united body, the Federated Farmers of New Zealand, took place. It was decided to forward a. letter to the Auckland executive condemning the action of Mr Rushworth in registering the new branch of Farmers’ Union (Auckland Province) as it was felt that this might cause disruption in the newlyformed union.

A letter in reply to the petition recently sent from Waitakaruru protesting against the proposed centralisation of the telephone system on the Plains was received from the Post and Telegraph Department, Wellington. The letter stated that the proposal was very indefinite, that nothing would be done until some time after the war and that no action would be taken without first consulting the subscribers concerned. Cartage of Stock It' was reported that permits had been cancelled! for the cartage of all stock to Westfield except bobby calves and lambs. As it was felt that the double handling and delay; in transhippingstock at Pokeno would cause depreciation in the value of the stock it was decided that a letter be forwarded to the traffic controller asking for the restoration of permits.

Further discussion on the opening of land in Waitakaruru for rehabilitation purposes was held .and members were unanimous in resolving to do everything possible to get the land opened up for returned servicemen. Emphasis was again laid on the fact that the land was far too valuable to be used as run-offs and that it was in the interests of the future of Waitakaruru to see that the land should be used to the best advantage.
