HEIFER CALVES
RESPONSE TO APPEAL GOVERNMENT’S' INTENTION POSSIBLE REPERCUSSIONS A question about the intention of the Government toward the number of heifer calves which farmers had raised in response to an appeal a year ago, when a subsidy for the calves was suggested, was asked by Mr C. W. Schultz at the December meeting of the' Thames District Council of Primary Production. Twelve months ago an appeal went out to farmers to rear more heifer calves, said Mr Schultz. He thought the response had been very satisfactory, but the important question now was: What was going to be done with them ?
Most dairy farmers wanted to unload a percentage of their calves. To do so, were they going to he left at the mercy of the market? “I am afraid it looks like it,” said the chairman, Mr S. E. Hall. Mercy Of The Market
If they were going to be left to the mercy of the market there would be repercussions which would be unfavourable to the industry, said Mr Schultz.
Two thousand .green calves were to be taken in January, but he did not know what would happen to those left over, said Mr Hall. It would foe a very serious problem if it were not taken up by the authorities, said Mr Schultz. “You see calves everywhere you go,” remarked Mr Hall. “The Government should) keep its promise,” said Mr W. Hamilton. On the suggestion of Mr 'Schultz, it was decided to send a letter to the Dairy Board about the matter.
