GRANTS FOR ROADS
DECISION OF MINISTER SOME HELP APPROVED OTHERS DEFERRED MEANTIME Advice that he had investigated the application of the Coromandel County Council for grants amounting to £6700 for various road works and his decision on the matter has been received from the Minister of Works, Hon. R. Semple, by Mr J. Thorn, M.P. for Thames. The Minister wrote as under: — “‘lt appears that the programme could be spread! over a period of, say, three years and that some of the items .applied' for could be deferred until after the war. “Of the more urgent works provision has already been made for Port Jackson to Fletcher’s Bay road l and for the concrete ford over Pahi stream. Subsidy Approved' “I am also prepared to make provision for the following works this year, subject to the usual condition that proposals covering the actual work to be carried out are first submitted to and approved by my department:— "Kuaotunu to Mercury Bay road.— The council asked for £750 for the replacement of Simpson’s bridge. lam prepared to offer a subsidy of £5OO on a £2 for £1 basis. “Colville J Port Jackson road.—The council asked for £5OO for the construction of two concrete fords. £450 is approved subject to the council contributing £so> towards the cost.
“Colville to Port Charles road. — The council asked for £250 for the construction of concrete crossings between Waikawau and Port Charles. A grant of that amount is approved subject to the council contributing £5O towards the cost.
‘'‘This provides for the most urgent works and the remaining items will have to be deferred until a later date.”
