FIRE PREVENTION
HOSE-DRYING TOWER NEEDED BY, THE BRIGADE IMPROVEMENTS AT STATION At a recent meeting it was agreed that a hose-drying tower was an urgent necessity and the Deputy-Super-intendant E. Moore, was requested to prepare a sketch diagram of the brigade’s requirements to be placed before the next meeting of the borough council for consideration, stated a report from the Paeroa Fire Prevention Committee which was before the November meeting of the Paeroa Borough Council. The report continued: —
“The chairman intimated to brigade members that the council would require two men to sleep on the station regularly. It was pointed out that to enable this to be carried out a further bedroom would have to be provided. The following resolution was passed: “That the attention of the borough council be drawn to the need for additional sleeping accommodation at the fire station.” Pelton Wheel For Bell
“The advisability of having a battery charger in the Fire Station was discussed and it was decided to further investigate the question. “Attention was drawn to the need for a pelton wheel for ringing the firebell. It was reported that one suitable for this purpose is available at the Komata Battery at a price of £4. “After discussion on the question of lining and ceiling of the fire station engine house the following resolution was passed: ‘That it be reported to the borough council that some provis-
ion should be made to protect the fire engine and equipment from the drip from the roof in cold weather due to the absence of a ceiling.’ Brigade Pleased With Engine “Members of, the brigade expressed pleasure at the arrival of the splendid new fire engine and indicated that it would do much to encourage the firemen in their work.”
The Mayor, Mr Edwin Edwards, said a hose-drying tower had been erected for the brigade. It was only used 1 once or twice and then neglected. Cr. J. Walmsley said the foririer tower was not high enough. The Mayor said it had been built to the brigade’s own specifications. Councillors pointed out that the old tower had been too low and the water had been left in the hose, rotting the canvas.
It was decided to refer the matter back to the committee for further investigation. Referring to the sleeping quarters, Cr. Walmsley said he had advised the brigade that two men would have to sleep in the quarters in future in view of the valuable equipment now in the station. The brigade had pointed out that there was not sufficient room for two men to sleep at the station. The Mayor said that the question of expenditure regarding the brigade had to be watched very carefully in view of possible future developments in legislation.
It was decided to secure an estimate of the cost of, improving the sleeping quarters. Referring to the charging of the batteries, Ur. R. P. Ganley said these could be kept charged by interchanging with batteries on the other borough vehicles.
