OLD MINER PASSES

MR HENRY WILLIAM LLOYD

50 YEARS ON GOLDFIELDS OLD KARANGAHAKE RESIDENT General regret will be felt at the death of Mr Henry William Lloyd, a well-known resident of the Thames Valley, who passed away at- his residence in Pahau street, Thames, early Friday morning. Born in Nelson in 1871, Mr Lloyd was educated in that district and came to the Thames goldfields area about 50 years ago. He was for many years engaged in mining at Thames and Karangahake. In 1903 he married Miss Annie Cordes, of Thames, and after residing for- some time in Karangahake, settled in Thames in 1918, where he has lived ever since. A Boer War veteran, Mr Lloyd was a very keen and active member of the Thames Returned Services’ Association end was the prime mover in the negotiations to secure a soldiers’ plot at the Totara Cemetery. He was a former member of the Acclimatisation Society. He was also a member of the Thames Miners’ Union, the Druids’ Lodge, the Oddfellows’ Lodge at Karangahake and Thames, and held the rank of Past Arch and was a Past District President of the No. 10 District of the Druids’ Lodge. He was also treasurer of the Thames St. John Ambulance' Association. The late Mr Lloyd is survived by his wife, two daughters, and two grand-children. The daughters rare Mesdames P. J. Hosking and W. B. Gleeson, both of Thames.

MR WILLIAM HENRY BIGWOOD

WORK AT TALISMAN MINE The death occurred suddenly on June 27 at his residence in Rewi street, Te Aroha, of Mr William Henry Bigwood, at the age of 67 years. The son of the late Mr and Mrs John Bigwood, Mr W. H. Bigwood was born at 1 Mataura, Southland, where his parents were amongst the earliest settlers. As a young man he’ worked at paper mills in Southland and later came north to flaxmills in Manawatu. Later he helped to erect the Riverhead Paper Mill (Auckland) and worked there for a time. While at Riverhead he was married in 1903 to Miss Ellen Nodwell, and later the family again travelled south to the Karangahake goldfields where Mr Bigwood was employed in the Talisman mine as a fitter. He worked there until 1913 when he took up land in the Balachraggan estate at Springdale.

As district mailman for seven or eight years, Mr Bigwood 'was wellknown in Springdale and Waitoa. He was a member of the Springdale School Committee, the Domain Board and the Springdale Sports Committee for a number of years. He was employed as a driver by Mr W. S. Goosman for eight or nine years apd about nine years later retired to his farm, which he worked until three years ago. l\ir and Mrs Bigwood then went to reside in Te Aroha. Mr Bigwood was a foundation member of the Waitoa Oddfellows’ Lodge and took a keen interest in lodge affairs. , Mr F. W. Bates, Past District Grand Master, officiated at the funeral. Mr Bigwood is survived by his widow, five sons, three daughters and eleven grandchildren. Messrs Johin and Percy reside at Waitoa, Thomas is with the R.N.Z.A.F., Sam and Bert are overseas, Tottie (Mrs C. Martin), is ajt Waitoa and Dolly (Mrs P. Winter), at Te Aroha West. Miss Evelyn Bigwood resides in Te Aroha.
