TOO MUCH DELAY

BUILDING AT THE SCHOOL

PROTEST BY COMMITTEE

DEPUTATION TO AUCKLAND

Concern at the unwarranted delay in commencing the erection of the additional classroom at the Secondary Department of the Paeroa District High School was expressed at Monday night’s meeting of the Paeroa District High School Committee and it was decided to send a strong let-

ter of protest to the Auckland Education Board accompanied by a request that the board receive a deputation from the committee so that the whole matter could

be placed before the board. It was pointed out that three years had passed since the additional classroom had been first promised and still nothing had been done. The chairman, Mr C. C. Webb, said that after the Auckland Education Board had been given the temperatures taken in the infant room last winter some action shofild have resulted to improve conditions for the unfortunate infants. The erection of the additional classroom at the High School would enable reorganisation so that the infant class could be moved into the main building where they could be more comfortably housed. Urgent In 1941 The secretary, Mr S. Wheeler, referring to past correspondence on the subject, stated that in 1941 the board had admited the work was of the “greatest urgency.” \ Discussion arose when the following letter was read from the secretary of the Auckland Education Board.

“I am directed to acknowledge the receipt of your lettei’ dated March 10 1 “ with reference to the question of the school accommodation and asking that in view of the increased attendance the new classrooms be provided at the Secondary Department.

“In reply I am directed to state that your ' letter was submitted to the board at its last meeting. The board, however, resolved that the present proposal to erect one additional classroom on the new site be allowed to stand. It is considered that as the roll number of the Secondary Department barely justifies the retention of a fourth teacher, one of the smaller classes could, in the meantime, „be taken in the library or laboratory. The chairman stated that he had received information that the Building Controller had been given a list of urgent works which the Auckland Education Board wished to have done and Paeroa was not on the list although there were items of £2OOO for the Ngatea District High School and £750 for a Native School. Paeroa Not Considered Some indignation was expressed by members at the lack of consideration given Paeroa and the above decision to send a deputation to Auckland was reached, Mrs S. Wheeler, the chairman, Mr C. C. Webb, Mr R. L. Darley, in conjunction with the Mayor .of paeroa, Mr Edwin Edwards, being appointed to represent the committee in Auckland.
