JURY LIST OF 1857

NAMES PUBLISHED IN PAPER INTEREST TAKEN THOSE DAYS Jury service, which has been brought rather more strongly to public attention by war conditions, was also a matter of public interest in Wellington over 80 years ago. In the Wellington Independent” at the beginning of 1857 there was published the full list, With addresses and occupations, of those eligible for jury service in the district. There were between 1200 and 1300 names. The purpose of justice Was not the sole reason prompting the 'newspaper to republish the list from the Provincial Government Gazette, as it stated: “The ‘lndependent’ being filed in the Australian in England, we hope to-day’s supplement will assure many relatives or acquaintances of the continued existence in the land of the living of some here to whom many letters may have been sent without reaching their destination.” Uncertainties about mails also strike a somewhat topical note.

“If I were a girl and wanted to choose a husband,”'said a well-known Melbourne magistrate at a Rotary gathering the other day, “I’d look out for a man who loved his pipe and liked his glass (in moderation). Long experience on the bench has satisfied me that men like that are broader in their outlook on life, - more generous, bet-ter-tempered, easier to live with. As for tobacco, I am convinced it does much to promote a spirit of harmony in the home.” (Prolonged applause). Yes, tobacco gets plenty of . bouquets thrown at it nowadays, but to be worthy of them it should be of prime quality. Are the imported brands always like that? No! Sometimes they are full of nerve-destroying, heartaffecting’ nicotine. The New Zealand baccy is the best. The toasting (or roasting) of the leaf kills the nicotine in it, leaving it absolutely pure and quite innocuous. Five brands only: Riverhead Gold, Desert Gold, Navy Cut No. 3, Pocket Edition and Cut Plug No. 10. For flavour and aroma they challenge the world!
