ROAD DANGEROUS
CROWN FAR TOO HIGH LENGTH NEAR TURUA HORSE TRAFFIC OF FUTURE That a section of the Piako road should be torn up and left as a metal road to further consolidate was an opinion expressed by councillors at Wednesday’s meeting of the Hauraki Plains County Council. Mr C. W. Schultz asked whether the bitumen on the Piako road could be levelled up and repaired. The engineer, Mr J. C. Clarke, said that he had done some work but bitumen supplies were the trouble. The council had been right out of bitumen until recently when further stocks had come to hand. He added that he had the road in mind for attention. Mr W. E. Hale said that the road as it was at present, with a high crown, was dangerous to horse-drawn traffic. He suggested that the crown be taken off and the road metalled and left to consolidate.
“There wilbbe more and more horsedrawn traffic in the future. It has got to come,” added Mr Hale. Mr Hale said he thought the length which should be treated was from Hicks’ corner to the Kopuarahi-Kere-peehi road. No action was taken.
