NGATEA INSTITUTE MEETS INTERESTING AFTERNOON RESULTS OF COMPETITIONS There was a good attendance at the August .meeting of the Ngatea Women’s l Institute, Miss 'T. Paul presiding and a fair amount of general business was efficiently dealt with. It was arranged that members bring along to the next meeting discarded rubber goods, • files, sugar ■bags and any books which would be suitable for the camps. iMrs Ron. Williams was appointed to take charge of the competitions.

It was decided to send parcels to members’ sons serving overseas, and to write to the Merchant Navy Committee for wool.

The roll call, a face cloth, was well answered, and these articles are to be donated to the Thames' Hospital. . The competition, a plate of shortbread, was won by Miss Paul, with Mrs S. iPhelps second. In the gardening circle winners of the following competitions were: Best bloom: Mrs E. Thomas, 1; Mrs Flavell, 2. Best Leek: Miss Paul, 1; Miss Irwin, 2. Mrs H. ißroadley gave a most interesting talk and practical demonstration on the pruning of roses. Mrs Phelps, in the absence of Mrs Howard Dalgety, demonstrated the making of paper mache splints and basins. ■Both demonstrators were thanked for their services, and warmly applauded by the members. •Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames L. O’Brien and B. Keyes- and Miss Irwin, the meeting closing with the singing of the National Anthem.

When pressed for time, here is a quick way to make white sauce: Put into a saucepan a knob of butter, a dessertspoon of flour, a dessertspoon of powdered milk, pepper and salt and stir while heating; when thoroughly mixed add cold water to the consistency required.
