DUTY ON SNUFF

AFFECTING PUBLIC REVENUES

MANUFACTURE OF CIGARS Snuff, which was sold by only a few Christchurch tobacconists before it was placed on the totally prohibited list in the import restriction regulations, is the subject of a notice in the latest issue of the Gazette. The Customs Excise Tobacco Duty Order, 1942, prescribes an excise duty at the rate of 14s per pound on all cigars and snuff containing less than 75 per cent, of tobacco grown in New Zealand which may be made by or for an Auckland firm of cigar makers, in excess of 700Glb weight.

This action has been taken because the Minister of Customs considers that the manufacture of cigars and snuff containing less than 75 per cent, of New Zealand tobacco is detrimental to the public revenues.,
