NOT PAID ENOUGH?

POST & TELEGRAPH STAFF

QUESTION BY MR SUTHERLAND

A tribute to the high efficiency displayed by the staff of the Post dnd Telegraph Department—they were most courteous and obliging—was paid by Mr A. S. Sutherland, M.P. for Hauraki, when speaking in the House of Representatives recently.

Mr Sutherland said that he had often wondered whether they were adequately paid in view of the many extra duties imposed upon them in recent years, and he would like the Minister to look into that aspect.

Many of the best young men ih the Post and Telegraph Department had gone into the Army. During recent years the Postal Department has had to take charge of car licensing, petrol rationing, food rationing, the social security scheme and, generally, their work had increased. The Post and Telegraph Department have also done good work with the National Savings Scheme.

He asked the Minister’ to see that the staff was adequately paid for increased work.
