INCREASE IN WAGE
NURSES IN LOCAL HOSPITALS
DISCUSSION BY THAMES BOARD
The question of whether the Arbitration Court’s second order giving a 5 per cent, increase in wages to award workers should apply to nurses and others in the board’s employ who did not work under an award, was discussed at the monthly meeting of the Thames Hospital Board. Mr W. Madgwick moved, Mr M. A. Ellis seconding, .that the matter be deferred) until the next sitting .of the board l , when a decision could be taken. He embodied in his motion a suggestion that the opinion of the Hospital 'Boards’ Association on the subject be obtained.
Mr C. W. Parfitt moved an amendment that the board put into effect now its previously-expressed opinion that all members of the staff except the medical superintendent be granted a 5 per cent, increase in salary in accordance with the Arbitration Court’s ruling in respect of award workers.
iLieut. M. Brook seconded this motion pro forma, intimating that he would oppose it.
After considerable discussion had taken place on the subject, the actingchairman put the motion.. Mr Parfitt being the only supporter the motion was lost. Mr Madgwick’s motion to defer a decision was then put and carried.
