FORTY YEARS AGO

ANGLICAN CHURCH DANCE AN ENJOYABLE EVENING HALL TASTEFULLY DECORATED (From the Ohinemuri Gazette of April 24, 19-02.) The first of a series of dances held in connection with St. Paul’s Anglican Church took place on Friday evening in the Wharf Street Hall. For this occasion the Hall had been tastefully decorated with ferns and evergreens, andthe floor had received great attention by the committee and was in perfect order.. Despite the counter attractions, about forty couples were presend and spent a very enjoyable evening. One very pleasing feature of the evening was the excellent music which was supplied by the orchestra of three, Miss M'edhurst (piano) and Messrs R. Beeche (violin) and ’C. Mettam (cornet). This combination of young musicians deserve the highest ipraise for the successful manner in which they supplied a long-felt want. Supper was handed round at about half-past eleven aftei’ which dancing was kept up merrily until one o’clock. Messrs G. P. de Castro and J. Garcia proved themselves capable M’s.C. Supper extras were played by Mrs Bucklby and Miss L. Silcock. The committee deserves the highest praise for the splendid way in whiph everything connected with the social, was carried out and we feel sure that these socials which are to be held monthly throughout the winter, will be looked forward to with interest.

that owing to the varie'd circumstances affecting supply from time to time it would be necessary to review the position periodically in the light of the then existing circumstances when further reductions in percentage allocations might be necessary.

The controller appealed for a continuance during the winter months of the spirit of co-opera-tion in order that all waste of electricity might be curtailed and the available power supply utilised economically to the benefit of all concerned.
