MYSTERY & COMEDY

PROGRAMME AT REGENT DOUBLE FEATURE NEXT “RHYTHM ON THE RIVER” “Rhythm On The River,” which screens at the Regent Theatre Thursday and Friday and stars Mary Martin, Bing Crosby, Basil Rathbone and Oscar Levant, is Paramount’s sparkling comedy! Another triumph right on the heels of “The Star Maker” and “The Road To Singapore,” with seven smash songs! A whole skyful of stars! A million laughs; A heartful of romance! It’s the show of shows!

No fewer than seven new and pleasing songs are divided between Mr Crosby and Miss Martin, star of “The Great Victor Herbert.” Basil Rathbone is seen in this picture in a much lighter part than usual. Heretofore, he has been cast in heavy, villainous roles, but this time he has a semicomic assignment as a song writer. In a strong supporting cast are ■featured Oscar Levant, famous radio performer, Oscar Shaw, Charlie Grapewin and Lillian Cornell. Movie-goers now can laugh and thrill with the two-fisted, tough and romantic sleuth “Michael .Shayne, Private Detective,” coming to the Regent Theatre on Thursday and Friday. This new mystery-thriller has Lloyd Nolan starred in the title role and lovely Marjorie Weaver heading a strong featured cast. Based on a novel by Brett Halliday and paced for thrilling action, “Michael Shayne, Private Detective,” is first-rate entertainment. Nolan plays the sleuth who is always on hand when anything happens and invariably gets into trouble. Assigned to act as bodyguard for wealthy Marjorie Weaver, Nolan is found with her at the scene of a crime. He’s the last man to see the victim alive and his gun is the murder weapon. Tough? Of course, but leave it to Nolan to come through in a thrilling, suspenseful climax to crack the case and unmask the murderer.
