PLAINS DRAINAGE

WORK OF THE MONTH STOPBANK ON WAIHOU FENCES IN NEED OF REPAIR During the month most of my time has been occupied with the building of the stopbank on the Waihou river on Mr Workman’s property,” reported the foreman, Mr J. W. Welch to Thursday’s meeting of the Hauraki United Drainage Board. “ This has been somewhat retarded due to the dry condition of the ground,” the report continued, “but the work should be completed this week.

“Five men on the No. 13 S’cheme have been made available to the board and' I have been taking them to and from Thames to the stopbank work.

“The,,hole through the bank at Hudson-Christie’s has been repaired but the bank at this point appears to be honeycombed and. I would recommend that a wing wall be erected outside which would make this position much safer< I must also report that the clay • road bank fi’om Pipiroa ferry for about 30 to 40 chains has been badly trampled by stock. “(Regarding Christie’s bore I.have requested the sharemilker, to block the water from flowing into the board’s drains.

. The, block on- the Zig Zag drain has been put in on the north side of the Thompson-Muelly boundary drain and the old block removed. The Ift. pipe and flap has been put in at the K-!K. road end of the ThompsonMuelly boundary drain.

The spoil left in by the railway workmen has been removed and the drain weeded for about 20 chains.. “•With Messrs Fox and Baker I met Mr Taylor of the Lands Department and inspected the proposed work to Price’s drain. Mr Taylor agreed to endeavour, to have his department’s diedge do the work and. I understand that a start will .be made next week. “ Upon a further inspection I find that the size of pipes in the Johnson internal drain are as followsDale,’ one set of 3ft.. and one set of 2ft. pipes; Wheeler, one set 9in., and one set of 9in. pipes at the head of.the drain. .

“I must also report that the fence in Mr Flavell’s is down for about five chains and all of Mr. Cleave’s fences

require reconditioning.”

It was decided that Messrs Flavell and Cleave be asked to put their fences in order.

I have reported that blackberry on Taipari drain in Taipari, on the Jubilee drain in Geislin’s and on Johnson’s drain in Keys’ properties require attention.”
