1940 CARNIVAL

TO BE HELD IN NEW YEAR

FUNDS TO BE CANVASSED DISCUSSION LAST NIGHT A decision to proceed with the New Year shopping carnival again this year was reached at last night’s meeting of the Paeroa Chamber of Commerce.

In bringing the subject up, the president, Mr D. Leach, said . that Mr R. H. Keesing had organised the carnival last year and had made .a success .of the function.

This year, the president continued, £6O ; would be needed to carry out the carnival and this’ money would have to be raised among the business people.

Mr Keesing stated that Te Aroha had already raised over £l7O and they did everything in good style, attracting a very big crowd. The president stated that the only way to find out whether the business people wanted the carnival carried on was to canvass and see if sufficient funds were forthcoming. Mr Keesing said it was unfortunate that there had not been a bigger attendance to give an expression of opinion.

Mr Bartlett said he had notified the whole of the business people of the town of the meeting. Mr R. A. Mace: The business people do not seem to be very keen. The president explained that it would be necessary to appoint a committee to arrange for the collection of funds in the town if it was decided to carry on. Mr W. H. Cheale: All the young men will be home at Christmas from camp which will help to make the period more festive.

Mr Bartlett said that although there seemed to be a lot of apathy at the moment it would be a shame if the carnival was dropped. The carnival, in the past, had resulted in a big crowd coming into the town. The crowd last New Year’s Eve, he stated, was as big as that on Christmas Eve.

Through the carnival, he continued, the town had benefited and if it was dropped now it would be hard to start again at a later date. The function should, he said, be carried on if it was at all possible.

■Quite a number of people, he added, would expect the carnival to go on although they had not bothered to come along to the meeting. It was decided to proceed with the carnival which will be held on the Friday evening prior to the New Year, Messrs D. Leach, P. Leigh, H. Shand, J. H. Bartlett and W. Hodgson being appointed a committee with power to add to canvass for funds. Mr R. H. Keesing was appointed organiser for the carnival.
