SPLENDID RECORD

SERVICE TO COUNTRY FAMILY’S CONTRIBUTION SOLDIERS IN LAST WAR Throughout the Dominion there are many families which have splendid records of service to King and country. Connected with one of these is Mr E. A. Mahoney, of Ngatea, clerk to the Hauraki Plains County Council, who has two sons at present with the New Zealand Forces.

Mr Mahoney, although born in Otago, was in England at the outbreak of the 1914-18 war, and he enlisted in the 2nd. Dragoon Guards (Queen’s Bays) in the first month. He was commissioned to the Royal Inskilling Fusiliers in 1916, was wounded at Loos 1915, Cambria 1917, and was dangerously wounded at Ypres, October 1, 1918. He was invalided out of the army , with honorary rank of captain. Mr Mahoney is the only survivor of four sons of the late Mi’ C. Mahoney,. of Whakatane. Three have their names on the Roll of Honour in the Hall of Memories in the Auckland War Museum. The youngest son, U. J. Mahoney, of the Auckland Infantry, 3rd. Reinforcements, was killed in action at Quinn’s Post, Gallipoli, early in June, 19’15. The second youngest, L. G. Mahoney, 4'th. Waikato Mounted Rifles, sth. Reinforcements, was killed in action at Romani (Palestine) about August, 1916, and the second son, B. G. M'ahoney, who went with the 4th. Waikato Mounted Rifles, sth. Reinforcements, was commissioned in 1917 to the Royal Air Force and was killed in action in, September, 1918.
