NARROW ESCAPE
FOOTBALLERS IN RIVER MISHAP NEAR OWHAROA EVENTFUL JOURNEY TO PAEROA A fortunate escape from.serious injury or even from death was the lot of a party of footballers travelling from Waihi to Paeroa on Saturday evening when the lorry carrying them overturned and went over a bank into the Ohinemuri river near Owharoa. They were members of the Manukau Football Club who had been playing in Waihi and who were making for the dance at Paeroa.
About a dozen young men were on the truck and near a dangerous bend the driver, Mr H. Knox of Waihi, was dazzled by the lights of a car travelling towards Waihi. He swerved to his left to avoid a collision but he could not get his vehicle back on to the road. It went over the bank, turned a somersault and landed right side up in about nine feet of water. All the passengers could swim and they escaped, wet and bedraggled, but otherwise none the worse for their mishap. They returned to Waihi for the rest of the evening.
