SEASON’S FINALE
PAEROA RUGBY UNION POLAND CUP & TROPHIES PRESENTATION AT SOCIAL. Trophies won by the various teams and players under the control of the Paeroa Rugby Union were presented at a dance held in the Regent and Civic Ballrooms last evening. There was a large attendance of players, supporters and their friends. After the supper interval the chairman of the management committee, Mr D. G. McMillan, introduced the vice-president of the union, Mr E. Edwards. Mr McMillan thanked the patrons for their attendance at the dance and also at the domain during the season. Paeroa had done well in going through the season without suffering defeat, and the union’s one regret was that it had not won the Peace Cup, “but it is now slowly coming up to Paeroa,” he added amid applause.
Mr Edwards apologised for the absence of the union’s president, Mr Wm. Marshall, the patron, Mr H. Poland, and also for the absence of Mr J. Peach, a keen supporter of rugby and the donor of the caps to the champion senior team.
He congratulated the players upon the way they had played during the season, stating that the standard was better than for many years past. The following trophies were presented : Senior championship, Ellerington Shield and set of caps, Hikutaia club. Senior knock-out competition, Drysdale Cup, Hikutaia club. Junior championship, Myers Cup, Hikutaia club. Junior knock-out competition, Williams Cup, West club. Third grade championship, Lockyer Cup, High School.
Medals donated by Mr McMillan for the most improved player in each grade: Senior, G. Clotworthy (Hikutaia); junior, R. McMillan (West); third grade, R. Bowmar (High School). Trophies presented by Mr Poland 'for the best forward and best back in the senior representatives, G. Laverick (West) and R. Swann (West). Trophies donated by Mr A. J. Parkes for the best forward and by Mr D. A. McKay for the best back in the Convent Old Boys junior team, S> Fisher and J. Bindon.
Messrs I. Robinson and Geo. Avery received the trophies on behalf of the Hikutaia club, Mr J. Pascoe, captain, for the West juniors, and Mr J. C. Silcock for the High School third grade team. The presentation of the Frank Poland Memorial Cup for the Thames Valley Rugby Union senior championship was made by the Thames Valley president, Mr C. Burt, of Wa'ihi, who also congratulated the Paeroa union upon the large number of trophies given for the players by patrons. “It must be a very happy moment for the Paeroa Rugby Union that the Poland Cup comes back to its home town,” he remarked. Mr Burt added that the cup went to Paeroa with the best wishes of the Waihi, Te Aroha and Hauraki Plains unions and he handed it to the Paeroa captain, Mr Swann, to the accompaniment of loud applause.
