JUNIORS DEFEATED
PAEROA RUGBY TEAM AUCKLAND VISITORS WIN HOME FORWARDS PLAY WELL. The Paeroa junior rugby representatives sustained defeat at the hands of the Auckland third grade team at the domain on Saturday by 16 points to six. The Auckland fifteen put up a very good exhibition of football, outclassing the home side in the back division but the Paeroa forwards played well.
Loose forward play at the commencement saw Auckland on attack but picking the ball out of the scrum cost the team a penalty, but the Paeroa team could not improve. Fisher broke through with the ball at toe and passed to Bindon who handed on to Avery but a weak pass spoiled the movement. Loose forward play in front of the Paeroa goal saw Bindon cut through with a 50-yard run before being grassed by the fullback. Goonan fumbled during an Auckland attack and the visitors’ pack went over in the corner. Auckland 3, Paeroa 0. Auckland worked the blind side from a scrum and again scored in the corner. Auckland 6, Paeroa 0. Loose forward play enabled Paeroa to make ground and Fisher went through causing Auckland to force. No change in the score occurred before half-time. The Auckland backs turned on some bright passing movements on resuming and from a scrum at half-way the five-eighths handled well in a reverse pass movement and they scored near the posts. The. kick was successful. Auckland 11, Paeroa 0. From loose forward rushes Auckland made ground and the half-back sent his line away for another score near the posts. The kick went over. Auckland 16, Paeroa 0.
From the kick-off Paeroa forwards followed up fast and the ball went out to Heslop who scored after a 20-yard run. The kick failed.
Auckland 16, Paeroa 3.
The Paeroa forwards got command of the ball and carried play to their opponents’ territory. At the 25 the ball went out to Morrison who scored .a try in the corner. The kick failed. Time was called with the score still : Auckland 16, Paeroa 6. Mr S. I. Mclntyre was referee. THIRD GRADE MATCH Thames team too heavy. A good, fast game resulted between the third grade representatives of Thames , and Paeroa played as a cur-tain-r'aiser for the junior match, the visitors winning by 24 points, to five. The Thames team was too heavy for the home side, who suffered badly from this disadvantage. Play was mostly in the Paeroa territory, although the home backs handled well, but they found great difficulty in tackling their big opponents.
