STREETS EXEMPT

SPEED RESTRICTION PAEROA BOROUGH LENGTH PUKE, WAIHI & TE AROHA ROADS Exclusion of portion of the streets in the Paeroa borough at present restricted to the 30 m.p.h. speed limit for populous area was recommended by the Transport Department in a letter to the council last evening. The streets were: (1) Pokeno-Paeroa main highway from the boundary to within about two chains of Hill street (Puke road); (2) Paeroa-Hamilton main highway from the boundary at the railway crossing for I mile (Te Aroha road); (3) Paeroa-Waihi main highway from the boundary to within about six chains of the Catholic School (Waihi road). The Commissioner of Transport stated that previously the council agreed to the derestriction of portion of the main highway to Thames within the borough limits, and that this section was finally excluded from the 30 m.p.h. restriction. At that time the commissioner was mainly concerned with the longer lengths within boroughs where there was no closely built area.

Recently an officer of the department visited Paeroa and inspected the other main outlets with a view to similar derestriction where the road was open and free from traffic and the various proposals were discussed with the town clerk, Mr R. S. Nicol, at the time.

Consequent upon that visit the commissioner considered that the three streets set out above which were either entirely rural or else very sparsely settled should be derestricted.

Before submitting those proposals for the consideration of the Minister the commissioner asked for the council’s views.

The council agreed to the Puke road length, but considered that six chains would be too close to the Catholic School on the Waihi road. Regarding .the Te Aroha road, it was pointed out that the new school would be within the i mile it was proposed to derestrict, and the council suggested that the limit should be at the school.
