FLOOR COVERINGS
RUBLINO AND LINTILE HYGIENIC PROPERTIES INSTANCES OF DURABILITY. and lintile floor coverings, made in Scotland, are without doubt the most hygienic floors procurable owing to the fact that they contain certain anti-septic and germicidal properties, added together with the fact that the floors do not crack. They are of quarter-inch thickness and can be obtained in all colours of plain, marble and jaspe in any desired pattern or design. The durability of these floors could be described by a practical case where at New York railway station the coverage has been laid for over 10 years and it is said that over one million people walk over it every working day of the week, and the flooring is not half-worn in any one place.
For hospitals rublino and lintile can
be used to its greatest advantage, particularly in operating theatres where the most hygienic floors are required and at the same time the floor must be almost acid resisting. In the London hospital during the rebuilding of the operating theatre, where over 3000 major operations had previously been performed over a space of 10 feet by 6 feet, their bacteriologist tried in vain to get any culture from the flooring.
The housewife finds these floorings a great asset. If she desires a highly polished surface any good rubber cleaning material (no matter how oily) will make the floor glitter like french polish or if, on the other hand, she would prefer a duller surface a wash over - will still keep the attractiveness of the floor. The modern housewife
usually prefers rublino and lintile in such places as verandahs or sunporches, kitchens or pantries, bathrooms and sanitary blocks, while one of the greatest savings is the use on
sink tops and backings. There is no scrubbing of sink benches when rublino is laid on them and the chances of breaking crockery are reduced con-
siderably, while there are very few materials which will stain rublino.
The material can be laid in plain, marble or jaspe body, with borders suitable to the rest of the room; or in tiles in any shape or size, or for the more ultra modern floor the material may be laid according to any desired plan.
In bathrooms a covering of six
inches up the wall can be obtained, while on stairways a nosing is used on the protruding part of the stair. For shop entrances the name of the
shop or firm may be let into rublino or lintile in any desired shape or form, or, to keep the uniformity of advertising, the trade mark may be added.
Counter tops and bar tops are now being used with these materials and in many refreshment rooms where tablecloths are not used rublino and lintile make everlasting substitutes.
The Queen Mary and other ocean greyhounds are fitted out extensively with rublino and lintile as may be
seen in their dining rooms,' gymnasiums and alleyways, etc. Salt water
does not affect these materials. They are used round the tops of the vessel’s swimming pools and on lounge decks where the salt water is used to wash them down.
The fact that rublino and lintile are odourless makes these materials so popular and universally used; and even in the intense sun no foul aroma arises from them.
